MANITOBA ARTS NETWORK

VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM INFORMATION

This program began as a coalition of rural gallery representatives in the Spring of 1985, and was known as VASE (Visual Arts Shared Exhibitions). Since that time, the Visual Arts Program has become one of the Manitoba Arts Network's primary programs and has representation from community based gallery spaces across rural Manitoba.

The Visual Arts program coordinates and tours visual art exhibitions throughout rural and remote Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Each of these exhibitions is enhanced by an educational component which provides schools, libraries, and community groups access to visual arts education.

Each year in the summer the Annual Rural & Northern Art Show is organized by Manitoba Arts Network and mounted in Winnipeg. The exhibition comprises a selection of prizewinning works from the six Regional Juried Art Shows held around the province.

Rural and Northern Mentorship Program

In 2009 The Manitoba Arts Network, in partnership with Mentoring Artists for Women's Art (MAWA), was pleased to initiate a Mentorship program for artists working in rural and northern Manitoba. This exciting new program was facilitated in it's inaugural year by Shirley Brown, experienced mentor and practicing professional artist.

The Program began with a weekend workshop that provided participants with the basics of professional self-presentation. Following the workshop, 10 participants were selected for a follow-up, one-on-one mentorship program over the following six months. The 2009 program took place in the Gypsumville/Ashern and Neepawa areas of Manitoba.
